Reality - How Real is It?
By Ray Bertani
In the dictionary, reality is defined as, the state of being real or genuine, an actual situation or event. I contend that there is no reality, that we are all living in a fantasy world of our own making, one that most fits into the model of the world that we accepted. Some of you may be confused about this comment. How can we be living in a fantasy world, the things that are happening to us are really happening, we're not imagining them. I am in an actual situation, just like the definition states, I really do have bills, I really do have a dead end job, I really did get fired from my last job, and life really does suck... and so on. And you are right.
These things really did happen. Nobody is disputing that. The only part that is in dispute is the "life really does suck" part. What I am disputing is that these events, and others like them, are negative, debilitating, de-motivating events. They're not, they're just events. Whether you perceive them as good or bad is just that...how you perceive them. How you filter the events in your life will determine whether they will be debilitating, neutral or empowering.
How you filter and perceive these events is determined by the extent that you bought into or accepted the societies definitions. If you didn't buy into them at all and you have your own model of the world, one that works for you, one that allows you to perceive the events in your life in the most productive, optimizing, and self fulfilling way possible, given any situation, then you have great control over your emotional and mental states. This allows you to, as they say, "take lemons, and make lemonade." This is the most empowering way to live your life. Imagine the possibilities if you were no longer at the mercy of your negative emotions - anger, fear, guilt, sadness, jealousy and so on. How much better would your life be? How much better would your relationships be, with you spouse, children, parents, siblings, friends? How much better would you perform at work?
How much better would your outlook be? Every thing in life is a choice, including your emotional state. Define the events in your life in such a way that they leave you stronger and moving forward. Don't fall into the trap of believing societies definitions and allowing them to control you. Make your own reality.
